A Book of Our Own
Book and Lyrics by Christopher Jerabek
Score by Christopher Jerabek and David Fraley
“Another Right Turn” performed by Marcela Ferrarone
“Who needs a beach or a billion, with a beautiful Texas sky?”
A Book of Our Own was the first piece that I ever wrote, in my freshman year of college at Pepperdine University. The musical explores a relationship over the span of three months, all taking place in and around the protagonist’s truck. A Book of Our Own is an homage to the people and places of Lubbock, Texas that helped make me who I am now.
“Another Right Turn”
A Book of Our Own may be a feature length musical, but don’t let that fool you. I have never taken a music theory class, have never been able to read or write sheet music, and can’t play a single instrument. This musical was written by slamming out music slowly and painfully on GarageBand. Because of this, most of the music isn’t what you would call “professional.” When one of my songs was chosen to be performed as part of Pepperdine’s 2021 Contempo, I made sure to get help from composer David Fraley to flesh out the rough score I had started from. I cannot thank him enough for the work he put into turning my song into a reality. Performed by my talented friend Marcela Ferrarone, “Another Right Turn” is a song about feeling stuck in a small midwestern town, waiting and hoping for a new world to open up to you.
