The Toll Box
Written by Christopher Jerabek
“If you don’t have strength enough to die for your people, then I suggest you try living for them. Don’t be their martyr. Be their voice instead.”
The Toll Box was written in the summer of 2024 after two months spent studying Christian nationalism in Germany. Inspired by the lives of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Václav Havel, and drawing from the many letters that both men wrote from their time in prison, The Toll Box imagines a jail cell outside of time where these two men are able to meet. These two historic leaders confront the regimes that they have stood against, the ideas that have kept them strong, and the sacrifices that await them on the other side of their cell walls. Deeply researched and academically cited, this academic play forces its viewers to ask how they have used their voice, and just how much they would be willing to sacrifice if asked.
